Rounded

FIXME A1 proofreading not yet effective for this page. In the meantime, you can ask any questions on the forum.

The question of rounding, particularly in accounting, is a question which sometimes remains without a solution other than conventional.

Gestan presents the rounding of monetary amounts, but stores the entire figures.

For example, an amount of 137.3083333333333 will be displayed as 137.31, if you handle amounts with two decimal places.

Option price excluding VAT v/s price including VAT

It is possible to manage the prices of your product catalog either from an excluding tax base, or from an inclusive tax base, via the general settings.

Often, companies working in BtoB will prefer to use a tax-exclusive basis, while BtoC companies will prefer an tax-inclusive basis.

Let's take a real-life example to understand the difference.

Or a company (hello Mylène ;-)) which sells parts at 6.92 excluding VAT and 4% VAT, therefore 7.20 including VAT.

On a sale of 494 pieces, we have:

Calculation method PU excl. taxPU incl. taxQtyexcl. taxVAT% VATexcl. tax roundedincl. tax roundedVAT rounded
PU including tax derived from the price excluding tax6.92 7.1968 494 3418.48 3555.2192 136.7392 43418.48 3555.22 136.74
PU excluding tax derived from price including tax6.9230769231 7.2 494 3420 3556.8 136.8 43420.00 3556.80 136.80
PU excluding VAT and including VAT at their rounded value6.92 7.2 494 3418.48 3556.8 138.32 4.04624277463418.48 3556.80 138.32

Depending on your settings:

It is recommended to always use the same practice, so that your documents are consistent.

Problematic rounding

For example, a seller who sells bottles at 16.97 with VAT of 5.5%. A good friend places an order for 5 bottles, and he gives her a very friendly discount of 39.30%.

This gives us:

Amount
HT 51.503950
VAT 2.832715
tax included 54.336665
Excl. VAT 54.336665

If we round these amounts to two decimal places, we have:

Amount
HT 51.50
VAT 2.83
tax included 54.34
Excl. VAT 54.33

There is therefore a difference of 1 cent since the results are presented with only two decimal places.

In this case, Gestan will force the VAT amount to be the difference between the two amounts, excluding tax and including tax. We will therefore have:

Amount
HT 51.50
VAT 2.84
tax included 54.34
Excl. VAT 54.34

(Thank you @GaëtanGF for this example)

Correct a rounding error on a part

In certain cases, notably non-homogeneous entries, it is possible to notice a rounding discrepancy on a part.

To adjust it, the easiest way is to re-enter the amounts including VAT or excluding VAT as appropriate, directly in the list of items for the part concerned, as below.
