Gestan on a MAC
A1 proofreading not yet effective for this page. In the meantime, you can ask any questions on the forum.
Gestan can run perfectly on Apple machines, using an emulator, i.e. a program that allows them to run programs written for Windows.
There are two types :
- the “full emulator”, for example Parallel Desktop, Virtual Box or BootCamp. These emulators require the installation of Windows on the Mac (A Windows license is required)
- Crossover, program that does not require a Windows license.
1 Parallel Desktop
To run Gestan in administrator mode, under Parallel Desktop:
- do “show the windows start menu”
- search for management
- right click and “run as administrator”
2 VirtualBox
The virtual machine VirtualBox is free.
It requires the allocation of at least 2 GB of RAM for virtual memory, and 20 GB of disk in dynamic size.
For the config you must install the guest additions to benefit from a good resolution.
You must then configure a shared folder for the export and database documents (import, export)
Everything works perfectly
3 - BootCamp
The free program BootCamp is provided by Apple.
There are many tutorials on the web regarding this program. See also the Apple support page here.
4 - CrossOver
CrossOver is the most attractive solution, but there is a problem: when printing reports developed in Windev, the frames are printed well, but the characters are not, even if the font is installed on the Mac.
We asked Crossover:
Hello,
We haven't tested or bugfixed that application so I can say what exactly the issue is. My guess is it's using a custom print system that doesn't use the typical Windows print APIs and that programming doesn't exist in Crossover yet. The only guess at a workaround I have is to try installing a virtual PDF printer https://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/mac/faq/printfromcrossover and see if printing to that in the application produces better output. Otherwise you'll need a full emulator like Parallels, VirtualBox, or Boot Camp to run that application correctly under the full Windows OS.
Thanks,
Andrew
To summarize, Crossover thinks this doesn't work because Windev wouldn't use the standard Windows APIs for printing, and suggests installing a virtual pdf printer, printing to that printer, and then printing the pdf.
PCSoft was also questioned: this link and this link.
There are other messages on the PC Soft forum , but this problem seems unresolved.
Gestan Cloud
A possible option to use Gestan on mac is to opt for Gestan Cloud.
No emulator is necessary, Gestan is immediately available in Safari or any other Internet browser.
An RDC Mac client is also available on the Apple Store, providing response times identical to those of a PC.
You will find all the information relating to Gestan Cloud here.
Keyboard problem
It has been observed in some cases that Mac keyboards can cause problems.
Some answers can be found at this link.
To get a backslash with a Mac keyboard, simply use the keyboard shortcut Alt + Shift + /.
